ICEing Your iPhone

If you are in an accident, how will the people helping you know who to call?
The answer, as mobile phones continue to be carried by just about everyone, is to have a common phone book entry that all emergency personnel look for. By convention, that entry is called ICE, and I encourage you to put it in your cell phone’s phone book.
The ICE (In Case of Emergency) program is a simple idea which solves a hard problem. I’ve already received emails from my county’s emergency services department about it. It doesn’t require any additional technology or software to implement. It doesn’t cost anything. You don’t need an iPhone to make use of this tip; just 30 seconds and a phone number.
- Create a contact labeled ICE on your phone and put emergency contact numbers in there.
- Write a note to emergency personnel who might find it about whom they should call, any medical problems you have they should know about, and then save it.
- If you’re doing this on an iPhone, add it to your Favorites list.
I’ll even provide a vCard template with the icon for you to get started. Add it to your Address Book or Outlook Contacts, edit, and sync it to your phone.
The more prevalent this idea is, the more useful it becomes.
So do this. Do it now.
